The Shorty Interview
with John Palmer
What's your best tweet?
It's Monday. I love being an artist.
What are six things you could never do without?
1. Ryan. 2. Strong, clear plastic tape. 3. An art studio. 4. Jane. 5. Our home. 6. Coffee
How do you use Twitter in your professional life?
To promote my art openings, share images of me and my art, bring attention to our daily art blog and to connect with potential collectors.
What's your favorite Twitter app?
I guess I don't use a lot of apps per se, but I loved it when the List Feature was implemented. Wise and way to go Twitter!
Twitter or Facebook?
Oh god is this a trick question? Twitter of course!
What was the funniest trend you've seen?
#ChrisBrownBowtie God he looked like a fool on Larry King. Plus, I like bowties.
What feature should Twitter add?
Some better away to show a public event invitation. I shutter to say that FB does beat @Twitter in that regard.
Who do you wish had a Twitter feed but doesn't?
Ryan's brother Marshall Lindsay. He puts some hilarious stuff on Facebook and he's anti-Twitter. His Tweets would be epic.
What are some words or phrases you refuse to shorten for brevity?
2 instead of to. Thx instead of Thanks. AOML instead of The Art of Meaningful Living. JP instead of John Palmer.
Is there someone you want to follow you who doesn't already? If so, who?
Sure. @Joan_Rivers comes to mind. Love her! Met her and presented art to her in '09. Would mean a lot if she followed me.
Have you ever unfollowed someone? Who and why?
I unfollowed hundreds recently--folks I didn't know because Twitter wasn't allowing me to go over 2,000. Didn't like having to do it.
Why should we vote for you?
Passionate about life, art and love. I work extremely hard as a full time abstract artist and I would love to share it with the world.
Terms you wish would start trending on Twitter right now?
"John Palmer Art" "John Palmer" "John Palmer Abstract Art" "John Palmer Artist" "John Palmer Gallery" I think you get it.
What's the most interesting connection you've made through Twitter?
@ccingreece An American blogger in Greece that started following when I traveled there. She brings light to our day.
Hashtag you created that you wish everyone used?
#arttoronto We should have had better sales @ArtToronto. We worked it with @Twitter and did create a sale to @MPuzzlePiece
How do you make your tweets unique?
I try and inject some humor with a link or pic. Ex. we made low country boil in a large pot recently. Tweets mentioned "loving the pot."
What inspires you to tweet?
Getting to share my original artwork and story with people around the globe. It's like folks are visiting my virtual art gallery.
Ever get called out for tweeting too much?
Sort of. I was sending lots of party invite tweets to my Houston Tweeps list and people got annoyed. Accused me of spamming. Toned it down.
140 characters of advice for a new user?
Follow folks in your industry. Reply to their tweets with intelligence and humor. Use List Feature. Post twitpics. Have fun!
How long can you go without a tweet?
Close to one day. Each morning I tweet that it's a certain day and that I love being an artist. So max. approx. 24 hours.
What question are we not asking here that we should?
Does online social networking replace the in-person viewing of fine artwork? No. But it enhances awareness and brings people to it live.
Who do you admire most for his or her use of Twitter?
John Rutherford. Sue me I'm a gay man. Those Colt dudes are hot and @JRatCOLT brings 'em to us.
Why'd you start tweeting?
Well, FB is about prior connections and friends. Twitter brings new, fresh eyes to my art. It's the future.
Has Twitter changed your life? If yes, how?
Yes. My life partner Ryan is now stuck on the laptop! (We work together and he tweets for me). I paint. He tweets.
What do you wish people would do more of on Twitter?
Post pictures! I'm a sucker for a cryptic tweet attached to a Twitpic. Will always click on it and look!
How will the world change in 2010?
People will be confident with their finances and see the wisdom of investing in fine artwork now.
What are some big Twitter faux pas?
Not giving a vote for a Shorty Award when we've voted for them! Ha!
What will the world be like 10 years from now?
Busy. Computers will have replaced everything (except fine artwork...) It will be fun. I like innovation and that comes with time.
