NavyNews was nominated for a Shorty Award!

Capt Dave Werner. My ship is a desk in the Pentagon. I live vicariously through Sailors 'over there' doing important work. Love to share their stories.

The Shorty Interview
with NavyNews
What's your best tweet?
CARL VINSON is 100K tons of iron off Haiti. How does it not sink? Easy... hope floats. http://bit.ly/6R97yR {today's best}
What are six things you could never do without?
Family, friends, faith, football, a strong Navy, and, yes... Twitter. Oh, and honesty. Is that seven?
How do you use Twitter in your professional life?
We're using it to help perpetuate what the Navy is doing on behalf of the country - runs gamut from Haiti relief to pirate take downs.
What's your favorite Twitter app?
Tough one... bit.ly I suppose.
Twitter or Facebook?
Cooooome ON! Twitter! Like the U.S. Navy it's a lean, mean machine that rewards cleverness, dedication, thick skin & a sense of humor.
What was the funniest trend you've seen?
For us, while inappropriate, there was some Twitter bounce about a Navy that would kill pirates on Easter that made the rounds...
What feature should Twitter add?
Watermark 1-800-USA-NAVY and www.navy.mil - but they've already thought of that. Probably too difficult technically. ;)
Who do you wish had a Twitter feed but doesn't?
Osama bin Laden. We'd like him to update it regularly, and include his location. We'd give 'ReTweet' a whole new meaning. Promise.
What are some words or phrases you refuse to shorten for brevity?
Tweet structure has allowed us the flexibility to write around that problem.
Is there someone you want to follow you who doesn't already? If so, who?
Any veteran who has lost touch with his/her most meaningful time of their life. Connection with our community can bring joy 2 both.
Have you ever unfollowed someone? Who and why?
Early on... some spamming fools. They muddy the water... so to speak. Rare though.
Why should we vote for you?
We're being pushed to by followers - shipmates. Not all that comfortable with it, but hoping awareness drives other government agencies 2.
Terms you wish would start trending on Twitter right now?
"Navy"... of course. Seriously, how about "service" or "howtohelp"
What's the most interesting connection you've made through Twitter?
We value all of them, but supporters of Navy - and @NavyNews - by @BostonMaggie and @ilovemytroops - EYE-WATERING
Hashtag you created that you wish everyone used?
#usghaiti -- It's a national security interest - heck a GLOBAL interest - that those around the globe understand we're stronger together...
How do you make your tweets unique?
Except Haiti effort, our value is swabbie chuckle ~ like real world Sponge Bob. We also have some of greatest photographers on Earth.
What inspires you to tweet?
Pride in my shipmates, our global mission, and their selfless families; and the reward I get from those who value my service.
Ever get called out for tweeting too much?
Yes. Earth Day. Had TWO tell me they were quitting for 24 hours until we got over it. Hey - not EVERYONE is a tree hugger.
140 characters of advice for a new user?
Add value, be responsive, cleverness is currency, and be you. Twitter users can smell fake. Really. Yuk. It stinks.
How long can you go without a tweet?
Haven't missed a day yet... averaging 20 or so a day. Ships & Sailors serving 24/7 - in harm's way or helping needy - deserve (y)our luv.
What question are we not asking here that we should?
What's more important - the number of followers or the depth of relationship you have with them?
Who do you admire most for his or her use of Twitter?
@flynavy - a naval officer who I respect as a professional, friend, and mentor.
Why'd you start tweeting?
I - WE - in public service have obligation to be transparent, responsive, and Twitter allows us to do so - efficiently.
Has Twitter changed your life? If yes, how?
As a Navy public affairs officer it has allowed me to much more efficiently keep the U.S. Navy as transparent and engaged as practicable.
What do you wish people would do more of on Twitter?
Reward users who make VALUED information available ~ news or content people can use in their lives. Discourage useless info...
How will the world change in 2010?
Its approach to 3rd world nations. We more we invest in them, the less we have to compensate for them. And it's a better world.
What are some big Twitter faux pas?
If you're teasing, don't forget the ;) We've had to work some DMs on truncated tweets where meaning was lost in translation. Oops.
What will the world be like 10 years from now?
Better. Just better. I'd like to think that as Americans we'll be the ones responsible. It can start with transparency, so we're on the way.
